A glossy, oversized, full color, full-bleed publication of 12 photographs by Raquel Navé—intimate portraits of the artist and her partner alongside close-cropped details of their domestic surroundings—which were taken over two and a half years in and around their upstate New York home.
“In the beginning, part of my life was ending. I had left New York City and the oppressive, unsafe environment that had been created for me there by the father of my child. I was entering a new relationship with someone I felt deeply loved by, deeply connected with, seen. I had given everything away, my apartment, my objects, my furniture, and felt I had lost my identity and my relationship to how I experienced the world.
“My new boyfriend’s cabin was next to the woods, with his things and his way of life, which my daughter and I adopted. I was reconstructing myself, becoming immersed in nature, struck by moments of light on the rock walls, on the way snowflakes rested on the leaves. I was in awe of my partner and his almost idealized masculinity and body, observing a new primal sexual hunger inside of me. He would tease and call me “pig.” I turned the camera away from myself and onto this new world, shooting before, during, and after sex. First taking wide shots, and then later cropping them, finding the abstract, the body as landscape.”
