INDEPENDENT 2025
MATT KENNY
F is excited to announce our return to Independent with a solo presentation by New York-based artist Matt Kenny. At Independent, Kenny presents two new interrelated bodies of work that thematically take on the eyes as windows of the mind, in scenes directed both outward onto the world and inward into the guttural cave of his unconscious, plumbing the depths of his overactive imagination.
These new works explore two scenarios: views framed by windows, and a group of works referred to as Splits made of cross-sectioned views, depicting landscapes above and fantastical cavernous voids below.
The caverns appear as naturally occurring or humanmade, as paranoid psychological depressions lurking beneath, as escape, for safety, or in the mechanisms of war. The presentation features oil paintings on linen, canvas, and gessoed paper, graphite drawings, and acrylic paintings on sandpaper. Alongside the new works, the presentation includes binders from Kenny’s archive, collections of his snapshots and works on paper, on a table in the middle of the room.
Matt Kenny (b. 1979, Kansas City, MO) lives in New York. For the last two decades, Matt Kenny has rigorously pursued the iconoclastic, often irreverent, universe of images that populate his methodically produced paintings and drawings. His works, which employ humor and banality in equal measure, explore the intersection of poetry and politics through various ongoing tropes: New Jersey wasteland-landscapes, faithful oil reproductions of paintings by masters such as Courbet and Goya, and his monster paintings: painstaking New York City-scapes inhabited by the World Trade Tower as cartoon monster. Recent solo exhibitions include Tower Paintings, 56 Henry, New York, Daybreak, Halsey McKay Gallery, Brooklyn, NY, Still Life Paintings, F, Houston, and Courbet's Paintings, with Green River Project LLC, Trevor Cheney Gallery, Los Angeles. He received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2001.
